I recently flipped the studio back into Painting Mode to work on a new commission for a collector in Houston — “Universe Radiant Drift,” part of my ongoing Universe Series. It’s been great jumping back into the abstract side of things again.
Getting ready for this kind of painting takes a bit of effort. I have to move and stack everything out of the center of the studio, cover up anything I don’t want splattered, set up lights from every direction, order paints, and mentally prep for those long sessions — usually about eight hours straight. Once the paint hits the canvas, there’s no stopping. I work with the canvas flat on the floor, which means by the time I’m done, there’s paint everywhere — on the floor, the tarps, my clothes, my shoes, and definitely on me. And let’s just say I feel it the next day from all the squatting, crawling, and stretching over a four-foot canvas.
But it’s worth it. Along with Universe Radiant Drift, I ended up creating a few more pieces in the Universe Series and even a new version of my popular Delta Blue, which I’m calling “Delta Blue Rising.”
I’ve still got a few blank canvases waiting, so who knows — I might dive even deeper into the abstract soon. Stay tuned!
